The First American Flag

The First American Flag also known as Betsy Ross Flag. Why? Because the first American flag was made by Betsy Ross for the navy of Pennsylvania. Betsy Ross is a Philadelphia seamstress who was acquainted with George Washington. She reports that she sewed the first American flag at May, 1776. No evidence for this exists; indeed, nearly a century had passed before Ross’ grandson, William Canby, first publicly suggested it. According to legend, a group headed by George Washington commissioned Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross to execute their design for presentation to Congress.

On June 14, 1777, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our official national flag. Betsy continued to make flags for the rest of her career. According to Betsy, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that included a six-pointed star. Betsy, a standout with the scissors, demonstrated how to cut a five-pointed star in a single snip. Impressed, the committee entrusted Betsy with making first american flag.

Every part of the flag is symbolic, or stands for something about United States. The flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.
